Sitting in the DC airport, excessively early. Excessive being, a great understatement. It’s so early in fact, we can’t even go through security. In part because the heat index is in the triple digits, and in part because we didn’t feel like trekking through the city with our backpacks. Mostly, though, it’s hot-and humid enough to rid ourselves of any semblance of cleanliness, something I personally hold onto as much as possible when traveling. Though the inevitable takes over sooner or later. My travel companion has taken to mid-terminal dancing to the instrumental hits of the 90’s playing overhead. We cope how we can.

Cusco and Travel "Hazards"

So far, we’ve been pretty lucky in terms of travel annoyances. Nothing major has happened, a delayed flight (on a local airline-not surprising), and a few instances of language issues (taxis). But overall, not bad! Today, we woke up early to catch a flight to Cusco, once we arrived and booked our tickets for Machu Picchu we settled into our rooms. I was excited our room had a safe, so when we planned on going out, I tried to put the laptop in. It’s a miracle I’m currently writing from it. Defying physics, it made it into the safe, but could not be removed! We tried every angle, but it was stuck…after the concierge unsuccessfully attempted to get it out, he had the safe removed from the wall. Still, nothing. We were afraid we would have to saw it open in order to get it out! Luckily, after a few more attempts we were able to find the “perfect,” and apparently, only angle necessary. I felt pretty ridiculous, I’m guessing that this had never happened before! But, I suppose if this is the worst thing that happens…thats not so bad!
It Finally Hits…
Yesterday afternoon I finally I got sick, fever and body ache mostly. But after sleeping all afternoon and night I feel much better today, still not %100, but better. My fever is gone, so now my stomach just feels “off.” I’m hoping I’m on the rebound, but we’ll see, most people who have gotten sick stayed sick for at least a week, but maybe I’ll be OK. Luckily, no trip this weekend, a bunch went to Zanzibar but the four of us who are staying longer decided to wait to get cheaper airfare. So just plan on relaxing the entire time, may go to the grocery store at some point…
Knock on Wood
Out of 15 people 12 are getting very sick, including malaria. Genny, Julien and I have avoided thus far! All three of us don’t work with kids so we think that may be why. Other than that, we went to a Chagga village today and climbed through the caves they used when the wars with the wamasai were occurring. Saw some nasty spiders… We also did a 1000 ft climb to a glacier run off to go swimming. Super cold, but very refreshing! Back to work tomorrow!
