Iceland: In Pictures.

ICELANDWe landed in darkness. From the airport to blue lagoon we sleepily gazed out our windows, the landscape dark and unfamiliar studded with lunar rocks, even in the darkness this place is unlike any other. Stars, which we always forget in our city existence, scattered the sky as we wound through the deserted countryside. In the morning, we were greeted by the above view from our porch. Noma.

NomaNoma. Despite the hype, my excitement regarding the prospect of eating here has never once wavered. I never thought I would be able to navigate the highly competitive reservation system, and even if I could, that whatever random time/day combination would never work with travel plans. But then, it did. After compulsively refreshing my browser I was able to secure lunch reservations on the day I wanted. This was 15 minutes after reservation opening for, within the hour, the entire month was entirely booked. Lucky, indeed. And so, on a twenty hour layover en route to Iceland we stopped in Copenhagen to eat a meal.  Continue reading

Notes From a Rainy Day

Apple Pie.Today, it rains. Not surprising in Ireland. It’s been clear since returning, almost tricking us into thinking it might stay that way. A steady stream of piercing cold plummets the outside of our apartment, fogging up the windows. Inside, there is a hazy low lit warmth that disuades our ever leaving its comfort. The Last Stop: Munich.

Downtown MunichWe would end our trip in Munich. I had been to Munich before, but not really. I had flown on the inaugural flight from Chicago to Munich in 2005 on my way to Spain. It was my first real trip overseas.  A band played at the boarding gate which had been roped off for passengers, they were dressed in lederhosen,  there were mini sausages too.
